In Moscow climbing competitions and championships take part considerably more often than in any other country. Leading Russian and foreign sportsmen come to take part in it. Very often competitions take place in an exhibition centers like Gostiny Dvor, Exhibition centre VVC, “Olimpiysky” sports centre.
Climbing competitions are divided in 3 kinds: “difficulty”, “speed”, "bouldering". These are nowadays classical competitions and there is a "duel" – a new kind of competition - competition between the best climbers.
Bouldering
A bouldering competition is characterized by short routes and high strength moves. Bouldering is typically defined as climbing without the use of ropes. Usually bouldering routes in a gym do not exceed 4m (12 ft.). Outdoor bouldering routes may exceed twice that height. A bouldering competition can be easier to organize than difficulty and has high spectator appeal. The pace of a bouldering competition is faster and more interesting for the audience and is preferred by many climbers. The bouldering format works well for either red point or on sight. Training for a bouldering competition requires power training.
Difficulty
This usually refers to the use of ropes to climb versus bouldering. A difficulty competition may be either red point or on sight. A difficulty competition will usually range in height from about 6m (or 18 feet). Training for difficulty competition requires a balance of endurance and strength. read more about this in Training Plans
Speed
This format is the most fun to watch and probably the most marketable from a media perspective. Climbers compete against time to see who can reach the top of the route first. One of the most popular and entertain competition kinds is bouldering.
Bouldering – is climbing without rope through the series of short routes of maximum (complication, complexity, hardness) difficulty having a time limit. High interest in bouldering depends on that fact that there are several climbers at one time – each climbs 1 of 6 routes. Maximum height of bouldering routes is 4.5 meters. Another one fact that attracts (casts a spell over, charm, bewitch) wide crowd of people is that sportsmen climb without any belay. Climbers are so close to the public that it allows to see all sportsmen’s emotions and to feel a great energy. A spectacular fall downs and acrobatical elements on the wall accompany competitions.
The aim of speed climbing competition climbers is to reach the TOP as fast as it is possible. The most interesting and attractive fact is that climbers start at one time, climb a route and than change routes between each other. The results sum up. The reached time you can see on a big stopwatch above routes.
In the difficulty climbing competition – the aim is to reach the TOP. Routes are divided in some classes; the most difficult routes have the highest number (4a, 4b, 4c, 5a, … 9b). Climbers are proposed to climb very difficult route. Then you look at that how high reached climbers – the climbers with the best results reach the final competition. The best of final climbers can take part in a Duel climbing.
Duel competitions – is an interesting and spectacular kind of climbing that allows to see results of the years of regular trainings. The whole point of this kind of climbing is that climbers start at the same time and climb side by side to each other. It allows to grieve, to watch closely over climbers, to compare a climbing level. Climbers see each other that bring an atmosphere of rivalry and opposition.
Traditional Rock Climbing
A Traditional Rock Climber is more often called 'Trad climber’. A ‘Trad Climber’ is given to any roped climber who ascends a piece of rock placing protection, like nuts and hexes, as he goes to ensure his safety. The protection , also called ‘Pro’ is placed in the rocks weaknesses such as a crack or a rock spur. The rope you carry is attached to you via a sit harness you are wear the other end of the rope is attached to your climbing partner. As you climb up your partner feeds out the rope as you need it through a belay device. For further information, please keep on reading on www.abc-of-rockclimbing.com.
Sport Climbing
Sport Climbing is very similar to Traditional Rock Climbing except for the difference in the gear. You still have the same rope technique but the protection is already in place in the form of bolts. Instead of using "nuts" and "friends" you have "quick draws" which is a short sling with a carabiner on each end. Sport Climbing is mostly face climbing and tens to stay to shorter climbs not much longer than two pitches or rope lengths. In addition, with the danger element removed, emphasis can be placed on technique and doing hard moves. For further information, please keep on reading on www.abc-of-rockclimbing.com.
Bouldering
If you boulder your feet may never get more that a few feet of the ground. You do not have a rope attached to you nor any other form of protection (except maybe a mat to fall on!!!) Bouldering is a very explosive Type of Climbing. When Bouldering you do what are called "Boulder Challenges". The Solution to these Boulder Challenges are a series of moves and you can do them over and over again until you get it with out hurting your self as you are just a few feet off the ground. Since you are just a few feet of the ground you can try insane moves that you would most likely would not try on a climb when you are 50-60 feet off the ground.
